With the expansion of data centres and with the advent of the AI era, the demand of data transmission is growing unabated. As one kind of network communication technology with stable performance, the 10 Gigabit copper interface has been a valuable choice for data transmission:

1.What problems should large-scale data transmission face with?

In the process of data transmission, signals often suffer problems in terms of speed, capacity, latency, stability and security. This is the point where 10 Gigabit copper interfaces with higher speed and capacity are valuable for support. As a network communication technology, the 10 Gigabit copper interface has its advantages, such as a speed of 10Gbps, low latency and universal compatibility.

2. What Are the Differences Between 10GBASE-T Copper Modules, SFP+ Optical Modules, and SFP+ DAC Cables?

2.1 Flexibility & Backward Compatibility

10GBASE-T copper modules all use interoperable 10GBASE-T technology. They all use RJ45 connectors and are designed to automatically negotiate speeds up to 10/100/1000Mbps and 10Gbps rates. In other words, 10GBASE-T copper modules can be backward compatible with general copper-based network equipment. 10G SFP+ optical modules are compatible with both 10G Ethernet and 10G Fibre Channel network. But the 10G SFP+ optical modules are all incompatible with the copper cabling systems (though these kinds of optical modules can also work in 1G fiber networks). The SFP+ DAC cables can only interconnect the two 10G Ethernet switches.

2.2 Latency

Maximum transmission distance for 10GBASE-T copper modules in a Cat6a or Cat7 network cable is 100 m, whereas the maximum transmission distance for 10GbE SFP+ optical modules is 100 km over single-mode fibre. The maximum transmission distance for SFP+ DAC cables is 10 m. SFP+ DAC cables are therefore most suited for cabling connections inside and between equipment racks. SFP+ DAC cables also have a very low power consumption and low latency.

2.3 Transmission Distance

10GBASE-T RJ45 modules with Cat6a or Cat7 network cables are cabled, which is cheaper than the fiber optic cable needed by 10GbE SFP+ optical module. In a data centre, with hundreds of cables, the use of lower-cost network cable can save lots of costs. Likewise, 10GBASE-T copper modules can maximize the use of the existing copper cables, and save a lot of cost. 10G SFP+ optical module requires relatively expensive single-mode or multi-mode fibre optical patch cords to transmit data. The cost of maintaining the fibre optical cables is also a little high. SFP+ DAC cable is the most economical type of product, and only deficiency is that it has an extremely short transmission distance.

In summary, 10GBASE-T copper modules, SFP+ optical modules, and SFP+ DAC cables differ in terms of flexibility, backward compatibility, transmission distance, application latency, and cost. Enterprises can select the most suitable product based on their specific networking requirements. Ultimately, the advantages of 10GBASE-T copper modules—particularly regarding cost, cabling simplicity, and power consumption—position them as an ideal solution for data center networks.
