I. Definition and Technical Positioning of the Two Module Types

1.1 10G SFP+ RJ45 Copper Module

The 10G SFP+ RJ45 copper module (10GBASE-T SFP+) is an SFP+ electrical port module with an RJ45 interface. It transmits 10G Ethernet signals over Cat6a/Cat7 twisted-pair copper cabling and complies with the IEEE 802.3an 10GBASE-T standard.

1.2 10G SFP+ Optical Module

The 10G SFP+ optical module is an SFP+ optical module with an LC interface. It transmits 10G Ethernet signals over fiber optic patch cords and is available in multiple variants, including 10GBASE-SR (multimode, short reach), LR (single-mode, 10km), ER (40km), and ZR (80km).

Within the YXFiber product portfolio, copper modules are represented by the YXF-PP-T-30 series, while optical modules cover the full distance spectrum with models such as YXF-PP-S31L-2D, YXF-PP-S31L-20D, YXF-PP-S55L-40D, and YXF-PP-S55L-80D. Both solutions are compatible with major switch brands and offer plug-and-play deployment.

II. Comparison of Key Parameters

2.1 Physical Interface and Transmission Medium

The 10G SFP+ RJ45 copper module uses RJ45 connectors and Cat6a/Cat7 copper cabling, which offers lower cable costs. The 10G SFP+ optical module uses LC connectors and multimode or single-mode fiber optic patch cords, which have higher cabling costs.

2.2 Transmission Distance

The copper module provides stable transmission up to approximately 30 meters in practice, while the optical module can reach up to 80 kilometers — a difference of over 1,000 times.

2.3 Power Consumption

The copper module consumes 2–3W, which is 2 to 3 times higher than the optical module's <1W. In high-density deployment scenarios, this difference has a direct impact on system thermal design and electricity costs.

III. Physical Layer Architecture Differences — The Technical Root Cause

3.1 Core Technology of the 10G SFP+ RJ45 Copper Module

The core of the 10G SFP+ RJ45 copper module is the PHY chip and DSP (Digital Signal Processor). It integrates a signal processor that modulates electrical signals and cancels transmission interference.

The YXFiber 10G SFP+ RJ45 copper module (YXF-PP-T-30) is designed based on the above architecture, delivering stable 10G transmission over 30 meters with typical power consumption of approximately 2.5W, bringing 10G high-speed connectivity to existing copper cabling infrastructure.

3.2 Core Technology of the 10G SFP+ Optical Module

The core of the 10G SFP+ optical module is the laser — 850nm VCSEL (SR, multimode), 1310nm DFB (LR, single-mode), and 1550nm EML (ER/ZR, long-haul) — which enables signal transmission through optoelectronic conversion.

The most common YXFiber 10G SFP+ RJ45 copper module models include YXF-PP-T-30, YXF-PP-T-80, and YXF-PP-T-100.
YXFiber 10G SFP+ optical modules include models such as YXF-PP-S31L-20D, YXF-PP-S55L-40D, and YXF-PP-S55L-100D.

IV. Deployment Scenarios and Selection Recommendations

4.1 Within 30 Meters — Copper Module Preferred

For connections within the same cabinet or between adjacent racks, the copper module is the recommended choice due to its low cost and plugandplay simplicity.

4.2 30–100 Meters — Depends on Copper Cable Quality

If Cat6a cabling is of good quality, copper modules can still be used. When the link budget is insufficient, switching to SR optical modules is recommended.

4.3 100–400 Meters — SR Optical Module Covers This Range

For crosscabinet or crossrow interconnections, multimode fiber with SR optical modules is the standard solution in data centers.

4.4 Beyond 400 Meters — LR Optical Module Dominates

For crossfloor or crossbuilding connections, singlemode fiber with LR optical modules is the mainstream choice.

4.5 Beyond 40 Kilometers — ZR Optical Module is the Exclusive Solution

For metropolitan area networks or longhaul backbone interconnections, ZR optical modules support transmission up to 80 kilometers.

4.6 Legacy Network Upgrades — Copper Module is the First Choice

When existing copper cabling infrastructure is already in place, simply replacing the modules enables 10G upgrades without the need for recabling.

4.7 HighDensity Deployments — Optical Modules are the Only Choice

In a 48port ToR switch, optical modules consume less than half the power of copper modules and impose significantly less thermal burden — making them the only feasible solution.

V. YXFiber Product Portfolio and Technical Selection Support
