I.Technical Definition and Core Architecture Differences

BiDi single-fiber SFP relies on a WDM filter to achieve single-fiber bidirectional transmission — A端 Tx1310/Rx1550 corresponds to B端 Tx1550/Rx1310, with complementary wavelength pairing required at both ends. The module integrates a WDM coupler that uses thin-film filter technology to direct transmit and receive signals to different wavelength channels.

Conventional dual-fiber SFP relies on physically isolated TX/RX channels — one fiber for transmit, one for receive. Both ends use the same wavelength, requiring no WDM filter, resulting in a simpler optical path and more generous optical power budget.

YXFiber has mature product lines and deployment experience for both solutions, providing precise module matching and technical support based on the customer's fiber resources and distance requirements.

II. 1G vs. 10G Data Rate Breakdown

BiDi modules have significantly different wavelength pairing schemes and transmission distance specifications at 1G and 10G data rates. The following sections break them down by data rate.

2.1 1G Data Rate

1G BiDi SFP uses SFP form factor, simplex LC interface, and operates at 1.25Gbps data rate.

2.2 10G Data Rate

10G BiDi SFP+ uses SFP+ form factor, simplex LC interface, and operates at 10.3125Gbps data rate.

Both form factors are physically identical in size, but the data rate differs by a factor of 10.

Wavelength Pairing by Data Rate

1G wavelength pairing offers more variety. Common pairings include 1310nm/1550nm, 1310nm/1490nm, and 1490nm/1550nm.

A typical YXFiber 1G BiDi product is the YXF-GE-B35L-20D / YXF-GE-B53L-20D, with wavelengths of TX1310/RX1550 ↔ TX1550/RX1310 and a transmission distance of 20km.

10G wavelength pairing is more standardized, with two mainstream options: 1270nm/1330nm and 1490nm/1550nm.

A typical YXFiber 10G BiDi product is the YXF-PP-B23L-60D / YXF-PP-B32L-60D, with wavelengths of TX1270/RX1330 ↔ TX1330/RX1270 and a transmission distance of 60km.

1G BiDi SFP supports a maximum transmission distance of up to 120km and is mainly used in access aggregation and FTTx applications. 10G BiDi supports up to 80km and is primarily used in data center interconnect and 5G fronthaul applications.

III. Technical Comparison: BiDi vs. Conventional Dual-Fiber SFP

3.1 BiDi Single-Fiber SFP

BiDi single-fiber SFP uses a simplex LC interface with a single fiber port. Transmit and receive share the same fiber — only one fiber is needed. Both ends must use complementary wavelengths. For example, if A端 uses Tx1310/Rx1550, B端 must use Tx1550/Rx1310.

3.2 Conventional Dual-Fiber SFP

Conventional dual-fiber SFP uses a duplex LC interface with two fiber ports (TX and RX). Two fibers are required. Both ends use the same wavelength — for example, both ends can use 1310nm, connected by a pair of fibers. The technology is simpler and requires no additional components.

Dual-fiber SFP uses two fibers for two channels — it is simple, cost-effective, and suitable for environments with abundant fiber resources. YXFiber dual-fiber modules are available across multiple data rates.

For example, 1G dual-fiber SFP supports a maximum transmission distance of up to 200km, with the most common model being the YXF-GE-S31L-20D (1310nm, 20km). 1G BiDi single-fiber supports up to 180km, with a common model being the YXF-GE-B35L-20D / YXF-GE-B53L-20D.

IV. Selection Determinants

4.1 Choosing BiDi or Dual-Fiber

The choice between BiDi and dual-fiber does not depend on the module itself, but on your fiber resource availability:

Abundant fiber → Choose dual-fiber SFP

Limited fiber → Choose BiDi single-fiber SFP

V. YXFiber Technical Selection Support

The choice between BiDi single-fiber and conventional dual-fiber is essentially a quantitative trade-off between fiber resources and deployment cost. The BiDi solution does not change protocol layer operations — the switch sees it as a standard SFP port, while the WDM filter handles transmit/receive separation at the physical layer, remaining completely transparent to upper-layer protocols.

Selection depends on the following input parameters:

5.1 Link distance and existing fiber type (G.652/G.655)

5.2 Current fiber core occupancy (used/available)

5.3 Leased fiber unit cost

5.4 Spare parts management strategy

YXFiber offers a full range of BiDi single-fiber SFP/SFP+ modules:

1G BiDi SFP: Covers 10km to 120km with multiple wavelength schemes, compatible with major switch brands

10G BiDi SFP+: Covers 10km to 80km with multiple distance grades, compliant with IEEE 802.3ae standards
