1.What is 100G QSFP28 Optical Transceiver?
The 100G QSFP28 optical transceiver is crafted for 100 Gigabit Ethernet, EDR InfiniBand, or 32G Fibre Channel applications. Sporting a footprint akin to the 40G QSFP+, the QSFP28 operates on four channels of high-speed data rates at 25Gbps per channel to deliver 100Gbps. Compared to 100G CFP/CFP2/CFP4, QSFP28 100G optics surpass them with the strong ability to increase density, lower power consumption, and reduced price per bit.
2.Understanding 100G QSFP28 Standards
100G QSFP28 optical modules are defined by two primary organizations: IEEE and MSA (Multi-Source Agreement). “QSFP” stands for Quad (4-channel) Small Form Factor Pluggable, while “28” denotes a maximum transmission rate of 28Gbps per channel. Suffixes like “SR4,” “LR4,” “ER4,” and “ZR4” signify short range, long range, extended range, and ultimate range respectively. In this newsletter, we will look into the Singlemode (SM) modules.

3.2 100G QSFP28 Single Lambda Transceivers  

In single lambda transceivers, data transmission occurs over a single optical wavelength, using 1 channel/ lane, allowing higher data rate over a pair of optical fiber. Unlike 4 lambda transceivers, single lambda technology simplifies the design of transceivers with reduced optics, thus reduces power consumption and costs. The single lambda transceiver supports only SM transmission, ranging from 500m (DR1), 2km (FR1) and 10km (LR1).

3.3 QSFP28 BIDI 100G Single Fiber Optical Transceivers 

QSFP28 BIDI 100G Single Fiber Optical Transceivers sometimes referred to as 100G BIDI, are available to network architects that seek to maximize their Long Range and Extended Range 100G Ethernet connections by saving dark fiber resources. If you are planning to deploy 100G BIDI in existing 100G QSFP28 infrastructure which has NRZ modulation support – 100G BIDI NRZ and BIDI NRZ LR4 modules are the ones to choose from. However, if your networking gear supports PAM4 modulation and RS (544,514) FEC technology, the 100G BIDI PAM4 LR1 and ER modules are the best options for your 100G Single Fiber links.
