Inquire

When deploying a 10G network, how do you choose the right SFP+ optical module? Among all 10G modules, the SFP-10G-SR and SFP-10G-LR are two of the most common models. Over the past year, our team at YXFiber has received numerous inquiries from customers, and this is by far the most frequently asked question.

What exactly sets them apart? And what happens if you pick the wrong one?

Let's start with a side-by-side comparison:

Parameter

SFP-10G-SR

SFP-10G-LR

Transmission Distance

300m (OM3) / 400m (OM4)

10km

Wavelength

850nm

1310nm

Fiber Type

Multimode Fiber (MMF)

Single Mode Fiber (SMF)

Laser Type

VCSEL

DFB

Power Consumption

<1W

Approx. 1W

The transmission distance between SR and LR differs by more than 25 times. If you're connecting servers within a data center, choosing LR is not only a waste of budget but may also cause link failures due to fiber type mismatch. If you're connecting across different buildings, SR simply won't reach.

YXFiber Can Help You Choose — Let's Break It Down:

1. Transmission Distance: From 300 Meters to 10 Kilometers

This is the most obvious difference between SR and LR.

The SFP-10G-SR is designed for short-distance transmission. It reaches up to 300 meters with OM3 multimode fiber and 400 meters with OM4. For connections within a data center — same floor or adjacent racks — SR is more than sufficient.

The SFP-10G-LR is designed for long-distance transmission. It reaches up to 10 kilometers with single mode fiber. It is ideal for inter-building connectivity, campus networks, and metro networks.

Pro Tip: Measure your actual link distance. If it's within 300 meters, SR is sufficient. If it exceeds 400 meters or more, LR is required.

2. Wavelength: 850nm vs 1310nm

The SR module operates at the 850nm band, a shorter wavelength that experiences less signal attenuation over multimode fiber. The LR module operates at the 1310nm band, a longer wavelength that enables lower loss and longer transmission distances over single mode fiber.

The wavelength difference determines the fiber type and application scenarios they support — they are not interchangeable.

3. Fiber Type: Multimode vs Single Mode — Never Mix Them

The SFP-10G-SR must be used with multimode fiber (MMF) , typically OM3 or OM4 grade. The SFP-10G-LR must be used with single mode fiber (SMF).

Multimode and single mode fiber cannot be mixed. Using an SR module on single mode fiber — or an LR module on multimode fiber — will result in severe signal loss and link failure.

4. Laser Type: VCSEL vs DFB

The SR module uses a VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) , which is more cost-effective and ideal for short-distance, multimode fiber applications. The LR module uses a DFB (Distributed Feedback Laser) , which delivers higher output power and more stable wavelength — essential for long-distance, single mode fiber transmission.

5. Power Consumption: A Key Consideration for High-Density Data Centers

SR modules typically consume less than 1W. LR modules consume slightly more, with a typical value around 1W.

For a single module, this difference is negligible. But in high-density data centers — where a single chassis may house 48 ports or more — the cumulative power difference can impact heat dissipation and electricity costs. If you're deploying at scale, this is a factor worth considering.
