1. What is a QSFP+ 40G optical transceiver?


A 40G optical module is a 40Gbps optical module with four independent transmit and receive optical signal channels. It is commonly packaged in CFP and QSFP+.


1.1 QSFP 40G SR4


The 40G QSFP+ SR4 optical module utilizes a four-channel 850nm VCSEL array and a PIN photodetector array, combining eight optical fibers into four duplex channels. Each channel supports 10Gbps data transmission. Link lengths of up to 100m can be achieved with OM3 multimode fiber, and up to 150m with OM4 multimode fiber. It is primarily used to connect network devices within data centers. MPO fiber optic patch cables are used to connect two 40G network devices, while MPO-LC fiber optic breakout cables are used to connect a 40G network device to a 10G network device.


1.2 QSFP 40G LR4


The 40G QSFP+ LR4 CWDM4 optical module features an LC duplex interface, four independent transmit and receive channels, and a data rate of up to 11.2 Gbps per channel. It complies with the QSFP+ MSA standard and the IEEE 802.3ba specification for 40G LR4 links. It features four CWDM DFB lasers with center wavelengths of 1270, 1290, 1310, and 1330 nm. It supports QDR/DDR Infiniband data rates, features a hot-swappable electrical interface, and offers low power consumption.


The 40G QSFP+ LR4 CWDM optical module must be used with single-mode fiber and has a maximum transmission distance of 10 km.


It operates by converting four channels of 10 Gb/s electrical input data into CWDM optical signals using a four-driver laser (DFB) array. The optical fiber MUX component combines 40Gb/s data and transmits optical signals over single-mode fiber. The receiving end receives the 40Gb/s CWDM optical signal input and demultiplexes it into four independent 10Gb/s channels at different wavelengths.


1.3 QSFP 40G ZR4


The YXF-QP-S31L-80D is a transceiver module designed for 80km optical communication applications. This design complies with the 40GBASE-ER4 standard specified in IEEE P802.3ba. The module converts four 10Gb/s electrical data input channels into four CWDM optical signals and multiplexes them into a single channel for 40Gb/s optical transmission. Conversely, on the receiving end, the module demultiplexes the 40Gb/s input signal into four CWDM channel signals, which are then converted into four output electrical data channels. The four LANWDM channels have center wavelengths of 1296 nm, 1300 nm, 1305 nm, and 1309 nm, respectively, which fall within the LAN WDM wavelength grid defined by ITU-T G694.2. The module includes a duplex LC connector for the optical interface and a 38-pin connector for the electrical interface. To minimize optical dispersion in long-haul systems, the module must operate with single-mode fiber (SMF).


This product is designed according to the QSFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) and complies with the standard in terms of form factor, optical and electrical connections, and digital diagnostic interface. It is designed to withstand the most stringent external operating conditions, including temperature, humidity, and EMI interference.


The module operates from a single +3.3V power supply and provides LVCMOS/LVTTL global control signals, such as module presence, reset, interrupt, and low-power mode. The module also features a two-wire serial interface for sending and receiving more complex control signals and obtaining digital diagnostic information. This interface supports addressing individual channels and can shut down unused channels, providing maximum design flexibility. This product is designed according to the QSFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA), and its dimensions, optical and electrical connections, and digital diagnostic interface all conform to the standard. It is designed to withstand the most stringent external operating conditions, including temperature, humidity, and EMI interference. The module offers a high level of functional and feature integration via a two-wire serial interface.


2. How to Choose a QSFP+ 40G Optical Module?


2.1 Transmission Distance


The maximum transmission distances of different QSFP+ optical modules vary. Generally speaking, the 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ optical module supports transmission distances up to 100 meters over OM3 multimode fiber and up to 150 meters over OM4 multimode fiber. This means that if the project's expected transmission distance is less than 150 meters, the 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ optical module can be used with OM4 fiber cable. For projects with longer distance requirements, the 40GBASE-CSR4, which supports transmission distances up to 400 meters over OM4 multimode fiber, would be a better choice.


2.2 Interface Type


Both the 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ and 40GBASE-CSR4 QSFP+ optical modules feature MTP interfaces and are used with MTP/MPO fiber optic cables, but their transmission distances differ. The 40GBASE-SR BiDi QSFP+ optical module uses a duplex LC interface and is used with LC multimode fiber optic cables.


2.3 Cabling Solution


Typically, optical modules used for 40GbE networks utilize parallel technology, using multiple 10Gbps lasers to transmit simultaneously across multiple fiber strands to achieve high data rates (4 x 10Gbps). Therefore, 40G optical devices utilize MPO or MTP cabling rather than traditional duplex LC cabling. 40GBASE-SR4 and 40GBASE-CSR4, two 40G multimode QSFP+ optical modules with MPO/MTP interfaces, are particularly suitable.


2.4 Other Factors


In addition to considering transmission distance, interface type, and cabling solution, other factors such as compatibility, receiver sensitivity, and temperature are also crucial. Before choosing a 40G QSFP+ optical module, users should have an appropriate plan and fully consider all aspects to select the most suitable 40G QSFP+ optical module.
