A 40G optical module refers to an optical module with a transmission rate of 40Gbps, featuring four independent transmit and receive optical signal channels. Its package type is typically CFP or QSFP+. The 40G QSFP+ optical module is an evolution of the QSFP, meeting the demand for higher-density, high-speed, pluggable solutions.
YXF-QP-M85M-01D multimode optical module is a pluggable module for short-distance multimode fiber data communications. The QSFP module is designed for multimode fiber with a nominal operating wavelength of 850nm; the transmitter uses VCSEL and the receiver uses PIN. It can transmit 150 meters on standard OM3 fiber and is suitable for various 40G networks.

In data centers, the excellent performance of 40G QSFP+ ensures the high efficiency of data flow, making various operations within the data center smoother.
In cloud deployment environments, the stability and reliability of 40G QSFP+ transceivers provide a solid foundation for cloud computing services.
In high-performance computing environments: 40G QSFP+ also plays an indispensable role in high-performance computing environments, capable of handling data-intensive applications and large-scale computing requirements, ensuring the efficient use of various computing resources.
Other applications: It is also widely used in the interconnection between switches, routers, servers and transmission equipment, providing a stable connection channel for the entire network system.
The main difference lies in the transmission distance. The QSFP-40G-LR4-S is Cisco's more cost-effective standardized version with a 10km transmission distance, while the standard QSFP-40G-LR4 is a more versatile, general-purpose, or slightly higher-specification module with greater compatibility and wider application range. Nevertheless, both support 40G/40K single-mode fiber transmission, utilize LC connectors and WDM technology, and have a transmission distance of 10km.
In unstructured cabling systems, fiber optic patch cords are often directly connected to equipment. This mode is suitable for short-distance connections between devices in data centers. Two QSFP-SR4-40G optical modules paired with a B-polarity MTP patch cord can achieve a direct 40G connection, as can two QSFP-BD-40G optical modules paired with a full-duplex LC multimode patch cord. Since existing 10G network connections typically use LC multimode fiber optic patch cords, it's clear that when upgrading from 10G to 40G, QSFP-BD-40G optical modules can reuse existing patch cords, thus achieving a fast and cost-effective transition from 10G to 40G.
In data center network layouts, structured cabling systems are more flexible and offer wider coverage. Unlike unstructured cabling systems, structured cabling systems require additional accessories. In a 10G-10G structured deployment, the most basic cabling method is as follows: two SFP-10G-SR modules at both ends, two full-duplex LC fiber optic patch cords connecting the modules to MTP-LC fiber optic distribution boxes respectively, and then an MTP backbone patch cord connecting the distribution boxes. For upgrading to a 40G-40G network, there are two solutions: 1) Select two QSFP-SR4-40G optical modules, replace the previous two LC fiber optic patch cords with MTP patch cords, replace the fiber optic distribution box with an adapter panel, and then connect the adapter panel with the original MTP patch cords. 2) If using two QSFP-BD-40G optical modules, only the modules at both ends need to be replaced; other equipment can be reused, and the existing 10G cabling layout remains unchanged.
The 40G QSFP SR4 optical module plays a vital role in data center networks as a cost-effective solution for 40G short-range interconnects.
